Image SEO: make images useful, accessible and searchable
Images should help visitors understand the page. Search visibility is a by-product of accessible, well-described images delivered in a way that works on real devices.
The useful numbers, with the conditions attached.
- Write alt text for the image’s purpose in context.
- Use images that add evidence or understanding, not decoration alone.
- Optimise dimensions and delivery without hiding critical text in graphics.
Choose images with a job on the page
A genuine project photo, product detail, process diagram or staff image can answer questions that words cannot. Place it beside relevant explanatory text and give it a clear caption where that helps. Decorative flourishes do not need invented descriptions; they should not distract assistive technology from meaningful content.
Avoid using an image to contain essential headings, prices, contact information or long explanations. Text in HTML is easier to search, translate, resize and use with assistive technology. If an infographic carries real information, provide an equivalent textual explanation nearby.
- Use original or properly licensed imagery
- Keep essential information in HTML text
- Place images near relevant content
Next decision: AI-search visibility: make your site understandable without false promises. If you want this applied to a live site, see the SEO audit scope.
Write alt text from context
Alt text describes the image when it is not available or when a user relies on a screen reader. Describe the relevant information, not every visual pixel. A product image might name the product and colour; a team photograph might identify the activity if that is important to the page’s purpose.
Do not treat alt text as a keyword field. Repeating ‘best SEO Bahrain’ on every decorative image is unhelpful and can violate Google’s spam policies. Leave alt text empty for purely decorative images so assistive tools can skip them.
- Describe meaningful image content concisely
- Use empty alt for decoration
- Avoid keyword stuffing and filename lists
Deliver appropriate image files
Serve images at sensible dimensions for their display size and let responsive image techniques select an appropriate resource for the device. Modern formats can reduce weight, but visual quality still matters for products, architecture and before-and-after evidence. Test the actual pages on mobile networks rather than optimising an isolated asset.
Set width and height or aspect-ratio information to prevent layout shifts. Lazy-load images below the fold where appropriate, but do not lazy-load the page’s main hero or product image if doing so delays the content a visitor needs immediately.
- Provide responsive image sizes
- Reserve image space to reduce CLS
- Avoid delaying the primary content image
Make product and image relationships explicit
For product pages, show several useful views where they reduce purchase uncertainty: scale, texture, packaging, variant and use. Keep images, names, price and availability accurate. Image filenames can be descriptive for maintenance, but they do not replace visible context or alt text.
Where eligible, product structured data can help Google understand the product page; it must match the visible offering. Do not expect image optimisation or markup to guarantee Google Images traffic, rich results or sales. Use reporting to see which image-led pages attract useful visits.
- Use product images that answer buying questions
- Keep imagery aligned with variants
- Validate structured data against visible content
Common questions
Questions worth settling before you commit.
Does every image need alt text?
Meaningful images need appropriate alt text; purely decorative images normally use an empty alt attribute so they can be skipped.
Do image filenames affect rankings?
Descriptive filenames can support organisation, but useful context, alt text and page content matter more than filename tricks.
Should I lazy-load all images?
Usually not the main above-the-fold image. Test whether lazy loading delays the content visitors need first.
